QR attendance or a turnstile is really a comparison of two different needs: a turnstile is a tool of physical control, while an attendance system is a tool of recording. Most companies buy a turnstile although what they actually need is a record. This guide clarifies the difference and shows which is required when.

A practical example
A company moving to a new office planned to install a turnstile. A quotation was received: two turnstiles, readers, installation and 120 cards.
During the discussion the key question was asked: what is the turnstile for? The answer was "to track attendance". In other words the need was recording, not physical control - the building already had its own security and access arrangements.

If the answer to the first question is no, the need for a turnstile is probably not real.
The recording limitations of a turnstile
When a turnstile is bought, the expected outcome is usually attendance recording. In practice a turnstile only partly fulfils that function, and the limitations emerge after installation.
One point, one data set. A turnstile records entry to the building only. Internal areas, sites and addresses cannot be separated.
Group passage. When one person passes, a second can follow - the classic "tailgating" problem, which undermines the accuracy of the record.
Failure. When a turnstile stops working the passage is left open and that day's records are restored by hand.
Access to the data. In rented buildings turnstile records often belong to the building management and are not passed to the tenant.
These four limitations significantly reduce the value of a turnstile bought for recording purposes.
The full cost calculation
In a turnstile decision the budget is usually calculated from the price of the device. The real list of costs is longer and surfaces once the project begins.
The lines that belong in the calculation: turnstiles and readers, foundation and installation work, power and network cabling, redesigning the entrance area, cards and their annual replacement, a maintenance contract, spare parts, and the working hours spent on manual recording during failure days.
If there is a second entrance, this list repeats.

A practical test for the decision
There is a simple way to check whether the need for a turnstile is real. Ask one question: how many times in the past year did someone's passage have to be physically stopped?
If the answer is "never" or "once or twice", the need is recording rather than control. In that case the turnstile budget can go somewhere more useful.
If the answer is "regularly", the turnstile is justified - but even then a recording system must be built separately, because a turnstile does not provide detailed records.
A third possibility also exists: physical control is needed, but a security service or an electronic lock solves it more cheaply than a turnstile. That option is frequently not considered.
Alternative control measures
When physical control is genuinely required, a turnstile is not the only option, and the alternatives are often cheaper.
An electronic lock. The door opens with a card or a code; passage control is achieved without the installation and floor space a turnstile demands.
A security post. Human control is sometimes more flexible - particularly where visitors must be registered.
Zoning. Access is restricted not across the whole building but only to critical areas. This reduces cost substantially.
The practical approach is to assess the need for physical control zone by zone. In most companies the need applies not to the whole building but to one or two rooms - and there a lock is enough.
Recording, meanwhile, is built separately across the entire site.
